The adult Carpenter Bee is about 1/2 inch to 1 inch in length. They resemble a Bumble Bee, however they are somewhat larger. The top of thier abdomen is mostly hairless and shiny. While the bumble bee's abdomen is completely hair covered.

Carpenter Bees get thier name from the habit of boring holes in wood. These holes are almost perfectly round and about 3/8 of an inch in diameter. These holes are used to lay eggs and hatch young, and may be reused year to year. There are seven species of these bees known to inhabit the US. They are a solitary bee not found in hives like other bees. The female Carpenter Bee will bore a hole from 4 inches to 4 feet in length in which to deposit her eggs. These holes or galleries are partitioned into separate chambers, each containing eggs.
The female Carpenter Bee has a stinger and will sting if angered. The male on the other hand has no stinger but tend to be aggresive and territorial. They will buzz around you if you enter thier territory, however this is just a show for intimidation since they have no stinger.
Use Tempo dust and a bulb type duster to attack Carpenter Bee infestations. Apply dust directly into bee holes. Leave treated holes open for at least 24 hours to kill returning bees. Then seal with Log Builder caulk when there is no longer bee activity at the hole.
